Delegates

The Constitution of Palmetto Girls State provides that the following requirements of eligibility must be met by the delegates selected to attend PGS:

Eligibility is limited to girls in their Junior or third year of high school and who will be seniors in September or January following the Girls State session. All girls must attend schools within the State of South Carolina (unless a waiver is obtained from the Palmetto Girls State Committee) and be sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.

 DELEGATES’ QUALIFICATIONS:

When choosing delegates, the following individual qualifications should be considered:

  • CHARACTER
  • HONESTY
  • LEADERSHIP ABILITY
  • SCHOLARSHIP
  • INTEREST IN GOVERNMENT
  • COOPERATIVENESS
  • MATURITY
  • DESIRE TO ATTEND PGS

These qualities are not mutually exclusive. The above-listed criteria are important when you consider that the week is challenging both physically and mentally and that the delegate must co-exist with others in a controlled environment on a regimented schedule.

Samsung Scholarship Program

Samsung has endowed a scholarship fund to provide scholarships to descendants of U.S. wartime veterans. Participants in Girls State are eligible to apply for this scholarship if they are direct descendants of a U.S. veteran who served during a period of war. Additional information about the Samsung Scholarship Program is included on the Delegate Information page.

Junior Counselor Applications

Junior Counselors are staff members who are returning to Palmetto Girls State the year after their delegate year. Their primary duty is to assist Senior Counselors in leading delegates through all of the week’s events. Please consult our Junior Counselor Application page for additional information.
