Junior Counselors are staff members who are returning to ALA Palmetto Girls State the year after their delegate year. Their primary duty is to assist Senior Counselors in leading delegates through all of the week’s events. Junior Counselors assist the delegates throughout the week by recounting experiences from the past year and helping them make the most of their week at ALA Palmetto Girls State. Junior Counselors attend all assemblies and staff meetings, lead the delegates in singing during assemblies, and assist the delegates in preparing their county banners for the parade on Friday.
Some Junior Counselors are selected to be members of the ALA Palmetto Girls State Production Staff. The Production Staff is responsible for running all audio and visual aspects of our assemblies. This includes running the soundboard and music, setting up and running lighting equipment, running video cameras and projectors, and assisting the Staff Photographer throughout the week. The Production Staff also manages all of Girls State’s social media platforms and communications with media outlets.
Those interested in becoming Junior Counselors should be ready to work hard to make the week a success and be willing to follow instructions. It is very important that Junior Counselors maintain open lines of communication with Senior Counselors, senior staff members, and delegates. Junior Counselors must commit to attending Girls State for the entire week. We do not yet know the dates of next year’s program, but we anticipate the 2018 session will be either the week of June 3-9 or the week of June 10-16.
If you would like to become a Junior Counselor for the 2018 session of ALA Palmetto Girls State, you must complete the Junior Counselor Application Form between Saturday, June 17 and Friday, August 15, 2017. Those selected to become Junior Counselors will be notified in late March or early April. Please direct any questions about the application to our Administrative Staff at firstname.lastname@example.org.
